Some of the recent achievements and activities of OMG have been:
- An acceptance by the majority of Funders of a basic equipment fee. Calculated on the basis that there are approximately 200 Ophthalmologists seeing an average of 1200 a year, this amounts to an additional amount of more than R10 million per annum, calculated at BHF rates.
- The establishment of a group life cover for OMG members. Cover is R1 million for life cover; R800,000 for capital disability cover, and R250,000 for dread disease, without medical examination. The rates are extremely competitive and will decrease as more and more OMG members come on board. Cover can also be increased.
- Instrumental in convincing Medihelp to pay code 0142 at R210,00
- Contracts:
OMG / Southern Healthcare JV
OMG, together with similar specialist network organisations, had a major impact in preventing the introduction of the original prejudicial SHCJV contracts with individuals. During the period of negotiations with SHCJV, OMG was able to gather valuable information and negotiated a more beneficial group contract for all its members which was unfortunately never implemented due to the withdrawal of Anglo American support.
- Relationships with the funders
The establishment of OMG has resulted in a significant change in the attitude of major funders. All the major funders are currently involved with OMG in discussions on projects that will benefit both parties. Although formal all-encompassing contracts are not being pursued at present, projects that have the potential to significantly improve income for members are being developed.
- Information Technology
Healthcare is being influenced by the IT revolution. OMG is actively participating in this revolution and an obvious example is the joint venture with e2 Solutions. Although in its infancy, e2 Solutions is expected to bring significant benefits to participating OMG members in areas such as:
- Creation of a closed user group bad debt list in collaboration with ITC;
- Electronic delivery of pathology and X-Ray reports, and communication between doctors of sensitive confidential patient information;
- Medical aid validations of patient details;
- E-commerce through the placing of orders for goods and services required by the practice.
- Medical Aid trouble-shooting on behalf of members
One of the most important and least appreciated aspects of what OMG does for its members is to intercede on behalf of members in dealing with medical aid problems. A significant data base of solutions to problems that have been successfully resolved is being developed, which is becoming a valuable resource to the company.
- Advising OMG members with regard to the legal and financial implications relating to the buying and selling of practices
- Hospital negotiations
- Assisting OMG members with the procedural aspects pertaining to fraud investigations
- Revenue investigations
- Internal Control Reviews
- Practice staffing/efficiency reviews
- Partnerships for joint ownership of equipment
Finally, the effect that the development of relationships between OMG and people in the industry has had on ophthalmology business affairs, could and should not be under-estimated, for the adage that its not what you know but who you know, is as important in healthcare as anywhere else.
