Invitation from the chair
On behalf of the Kwazulu-Natal Branch of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa, I take great pleasure in inviting you to the 51st Congress of the Society to be held in Durban in 2023. This is a long overdue congress as the 2021 meeting was cancelled due to COVID.
KZN has been through a dark and unsettling period since March 2020. We thought COVID would be our nemesis, however the July 2021 riots in KZN threw us all off-balance and we had to dig deep to muster energy for the way forward. Just as we thought we could settle alongside COVID as part of our new normal, the floods demolished parts of our province that will take years to rebuild and repair. KZN is however blessed with people who will not falter and stumble on the rocky road we must travel in our beautiful province. Slowly, but surely, repair work has started and there is an optimism that KZN will once again be the destination of choice. I salute all who are helping to restore KZN on many levels from repairing buildings and infrastructure, caring for our neighbours, and making daily life in KZN easier than it has been for the past three years.
We are looking forward to meeting with you once again in the lecture halls, discussion groups and informal get togethers. Please join us for a full academic programme for ophthalmologists. There are parallel programmes for optometrists, ophthalmic assistants, ophthalmic nurses, practice managers and administrators. A great attraction as always are the pre-congress masterclasses. We are assembling a faculty of respected speakers, both internationally and locally. The opportunity to be informed of the latest advances in Ophthalmology is not going to be missed and I personally look forward to what is to offer in this field.
All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. Therefore, with all our friends and colleagues from across the country and all over the globe the OSSA 2023 social programme is top priority.
We are looking forward to welcoming you on the beautiful and friendly East Coast of KZN at the 51st Congress of OSSA.
